Les Galettes de blé noir
The story : The buckweat, also called Saracen or black wheat (it’s actually not a wheat at all, it’s a bush-type plant with white or pink flowers & black fruits !) was imported in France during the XIIth century by the Croisés from Népal & Asia. The peasants cultivated it across the whole countryside in France and ate it in a kind of pulp. Buckwheat began as a dish for the poor ; although after a time (XVth Century), the culture of preparing the buckwheat had spread and was centered in Brittany (N-W of France). The popularity of galettes began with a legend and historic Duchess of Brittany, Anne de Bretagne. Surprised by a violent storm in Brittany, she took refuge with a poor logger. The logger's daughter worked hard with these basic ingredients to serve a meal worthy of the Duchess who was so charmed that she bade one of her pages to marry the young girl ! Once married to the page, the young girl became countess of Kergalen ! Following this episode, Anne de Bretagne inclined the culture of buckwheat and the galettes became popular throughout France.
French citizens will often enjoy a galette with a “bolée” of CIDER.
